Humble beginnings...
The sky was grey and glowering—grey against the grey foreground of Berlin where I had spent New Year's Eve. Though it was eight o'clock in the morning, it was still dark under the thick cloud as though nighttime has been allowed to linger. The rain came down in stair-rods and only the occasional flash of lightning split the gloom as I got on the train towards the French border. An hour's delay in the cold at the French border for the train that would take me on to Paris did not help matters.
When I finally arrived, I found my apartment—a tiny garret in the first that would be home for the next couple of months. It was already late so I set about unpacking and making the place feel more homely. For what I hope will be the last time dinner came out of a jar: fusilli pasta (the spiral shape) with basil pesto and tomatoes—simple but comforting. I promise to post a recipe for vegan pesto soon!
