A home away from home...

I quickly made a recipe video of the Hung Shao Pork that I had made on Sunday, which I ate again for lunch, and then got on the train to Angoulême where I would be picked up by Lulu Image, a friend who lives with her family in the Dordogne and who I was going to visit for a few days. They live in a kind of fairytale house deep in rural France. Lulu trained at Leith’s in London, when Prue Leith was still teaching there, and is a truly excellent cook. Tonight’s dinner was inspired by a Fergus Henderson recipe (of St John’s Brasserie fame) and consisted of organic quails, over-seasoned and coloured in butter, then roasted quickly in the oven, served with really garlicky aioli, all to be eaten with one’s fingers. Lulu cooked steak to follow up which we ate in thin strips with a green salad—heaven!

Dinner: Roast quail with mouth-watering aioli, followed by sirloin steak, marinated in woody herbs and seared rare.
